Antler socketed celts are probably the most famous tool type found on Swiss lake dwelling sites. Antler sockets serve as shock absorbers to protect the handle from splitting. This antler/celt assembly measures 4 7/8 inches (11.7 cm) long.
In the United States, antler sockets have been found on the Cushing site at Key Marco in Florida. They were hafted as adzes rather than axes.
